Gilgandra Shire Library News - December 6

Point Blank Writers’ Group

Point Blank Writers’ Group meets once a month at the library on Saturday afternoons to share stories and workshop writing skills. At our final meeting for the year, we will be sharing the descriptive writing we’ve worked on over the last few weeks and are looking forward to hearing each other’s pieces. We will also have a short workshop on The Senses followed by a Chris-tmas get together. Point Blank is for people with a love of words and writing, and everyone is welcome to join.

Savings Finder Appointments Available

Did you know that there are over 70 rebates, savings, and vouchers available that can save you money? Tamara from Service NSW is visiting the library once a month to provide one-on-one help to anyone who would like to register for some of these offers.

Designs From Your Mind LEGO® Club

A new work experience student started at Gilgandra Shire Library last week, and joined in the fun of DFYM (Designs From Your Mind) LEGO® Club. At this meet we played our favourite game, LEGO® Bingo, and the student called-out all the pieces. Then, inspired by our student, the builders were told to imagine that they were in year 10 and had to do work-experience. The builders were asked to build the crazy situations they would find themselves in. We then built work experience students on LEGO® Masters, in the library, as police officers, exotic animal handlers, herpetologists (snake experts), football players, and deadly chefs. All the builds were very creative and fun!

Tech Club

At Tech Club last week, we continued working with the Turing Tumble. This is a game where you build mechanical computers powered by marbles to solve logic puzzles. It’s fun and, while you’re at it, you discover how computers work. You learn coding strategy as well as abstract concepts like binary, binary operators, and logic gates in a fun, hands on way, with no electronics at all. We’ve found that our members really enjoy this method of learning, as they set up and solve increasingly complex challenges on the Turing Tumble.

Tech Club and DFYM LEGO® Club are our two after school programs, held every week during school term. We welcome new participants, but space is limited, so bookings are essential.
