Tech Savvy Seniors, After school activities, and Summer reading challenge finale

Telstra Tech Savvy Seniors

Last week at our two Tech Savvy Seniors sessions, everyone set up a new email account and explored the features, sending and receiving emails.

There was time for plenty of questions and problem solving.

These sessions are thanks to a partnership with Telstra, the state government, and the State Library of NSW, and are for people with little or no prior experience with technology.

While our current sessions are full, we have a waiting list for future sessions.

After-school activities

We were seeing twos at DFYM (Designs From Your Mind - LEGO® Club) last week as we celebrated the special ‘Twosday’ on Tuesday the 22/02/22.

Using our knowledge of the world around us we thought of things that usually come in pairs and built them using LEGO® bricks; we created shoes, eyes, glasses, headphones (with two earpieces), and a body with two feet, legs, arms and two heads!

Our builders applied their mathematical skills to undertake the next task; builders had to create a 22cm tall number two. We knew that one brick is 1cm tall so that meant our number had to be 22 bricks high. It took some skill to create the curve of the two and to keep it balanced but we did a great job.

Our display of “22.2.22” is in the library for everyone to come and see. Last week at Code Club we continued our exploration of all the tech available at the library, with mechanics, coding and logic games on offer. Our coders finished creating a wind up light, and tested variations in gear direction and speed, resulting in impressive results.

We then moved on to Scratch, a block-based coding program that allows children to create simple games and animations.

Finally, we played with the Turing-Tumbles, a challenge which encourages logic and problem solving. What will we learn next week? Both activities are free of charge. Places are limited, so bookings are essential.

The Summer Reading Challenge was finalised last week, with many readers coming in to collect their reward bags and certificates.

We are very proud of all the readers who participated!
