Conclusion of the Reading Passport Competition

Gilgandra has some great readers. We have been delighted to pre- sent certificates and rewards to many children for completing the Reading Passport challenge. Well done, everyone.

DFYM LEGO® Club

Our builders had a great time experimenting with the concept of gravity and balance last week at DFYM (Designs From Your Mind) LEGO® club. They were given the challenge of building down from the edge of the table, a task which required them to counterbalance the weight of the bricks going down. The- re were several ingenious designs, as the builders experimented with distributing weight.

Our second challenge was to balance an elaborate build on top of a moving technic brick. This was tricky, as the technic brick was loosely threaded on an axle and was very wobbly. Our builders found many ways to solve the problem and even built houses and restaurants on top of the single brick. How clever.

Tech Club

We have started a new focus at Tech Club, with our participants learning about film techniques. Our first project is animation, in particular, stop-motion animation. Stop-motion

animation involves taking lots of pho- tos and combining them to create a movie. We began our session with discussing how stop motion works, before thinking of a simple nursery rhyme to base an animation on. Our filmmakers drew the scenes of the nursery rhyme into a storyboard, before beginning to draw the charac- ters, which will be turned into pup- pets for the movie. This week we will continue working on our puppets and backgrounds before commencing photography.

It’s not too late to join us on this new topic, so come along and create your own films. Tech Club is held once a week, after school, and is suitable for children aged eight and over.

Library Book Club

Next week, the Library Book Club, we will be meeting to discuss Richard Glover’s memoir ‘Flesh Wounds’. The group meet once a month, and read a diverse range of fiction and nonfiction.

Point Blank Writers’ Group

Point Blank Writers’ Group will meet next week. Point Blank Writers’ Group have a writing workshop at every meeting, and we enjoy sharing stories and a love of writing. New members are always welcome.
