End of an era: Last hurrah for town band

It’s the end of an era for the Gilgandra Services Memorial Band, but only the beginning of its legacy.

By Emily Middleton

In September last year, remaining band members Maxine Elsom and the late Terry Nangle made the decision to wind up the band and give the remaining funds back to the community.

In October they sponsored the Dubbo Marching Band to attend the ‘Back to Gilgandra Weekend’, and it was decid- ed the remaining funds would go to Windmill Cottage.

Close friend and carer of the late Mr Nangle, Jenny Johnston noticed a need for some outdoor furniture at the cottage so, with the remaining funds bought two sets of tables and chairs for the verandah.

“This way there’s a comfortable spot to sit out and eat lunch, there’s room for families to visit, and it’s not a hassle just trying to sit outside,” explained Ms Johnston.

“They look wonderful and are being used every day, especially when the sun is shining.”

A lot of research went into the furniture, it’s weight, shape, accessibility, and the residents couldn’t be happier with their new cup of tea spot. In memory of the late Mr Nangle, a plaque was put up near the tables.

It reads: “Outdoor furniture donated to Windmill Cottage by The Gilgandra Services Memorial Band. In memory of bandmaster Terry Nangle for his invaluable volunteer service to the community.”

Ms Johnston spoke fondly of Mr Nangle’s invaluable volunteer work in the community, and said that the plaque was a fitting acknowledgement of the time he gave to so many.

“He would be so happy to see the money be put to such good use. It makes me happy too to see everyone so happy, in memory of Terry,” she said.

Ms Johnston also made acknowledgement to the staff at Windmill Cottage, speaking of the wonderful care they all provide.

“It’s not always an easy job, but we are so thankful for all that you do. You all go above and beyond making sure everyday is the best it can be for everyone.”
