Big rise in local parcel deliveries
Gilgandra Licenced Post Office (LPO) has experienced a major surge in parcel numbers under lockdown, handling up to three times the average daily volume.
“Generally, we would get three to five pallets of parcels delivered, but during the peak we were getting up to 13 pallets,” said Gilgandra LPO licensee, Stuart Border.
Parcels have frequently spilled outside the post office building due to a lack of space.
“We are so thankful that we have an honest community, because the packages were lined up out the front early in the morning, sometimes even spilling out onto the concrete just until we got organised.”
The Gilgandra LPO now has a second delivery van, to stay on top of all the packages.
Due to the large increase in demand, Australia Post has a large backlog or parcels ordered during the lockdown period. This is causing major delays in packages being transported to Gilgandra for local delivery.
“We don’t carry parcels over, no matter how busy we are,” said Mr Border.
“We get all our parcels delivered the day they arrive unless they’re carded. But people have to realise they might have been ordering off a particular site and getting it within three, five, seven days, now its honestly 10, 12, 15 days. Unfortunately, we can’t deliver the parcel until it gets to Gilgandra.”
